musical wonders

These are a bunch of songs I've recorded with lots of good folks. Have a listen! Or even better, grab a musical instrument, write some parts and come jam with me and David.

Firstly, here is my 'Compendium' - every song (besides a few) that I wrote between 2000 and 2010: Jen Overstreet made the cover art, and clicking on it will send you to a directory where you can download any and all songs you wish!

The following are albums that I've put together in hindsight. Click on the album covers to download a .zip folder of various amounts of songs. Nothing's labelled particularly well, but I imagine at some point in the future that may be worth doing.

Roughly in reverse chronological order:

This collection of recordings reflects a learning experience and should be judged accordingly - for individual songs, click below.

Getting Banjo with lots of friends and a guy named Danny

RoboTriptych:

Pretty self-explanatory; inspired by the lovely Janelle Monae, and in hope of encouraging her and P. Diddy's budding space-opera. Also, for the record: David says that he has heard many better renditions of the third song (the very last robot/roborubble) - but to be fair, I am generally terrible with recording equipment.

Four Chords for a City:

This is the result of a few months of jamming with Shira Burton and David Beasley and a year or so of song-writing. One evening her brother Michael came over and we played them straight through. He did an amazing job on the first play-through and Shira is an amazingly talented musician (this picture comes from my recent wedding and their beautiful accompaniment to the ceremony).

NYC:

What David Beasley and Shira Burton and I have come up with so far in this beautiful new city. We've been working on a properly recorded album and it should show up on this page in the not too distant future [this is now true].

Jay's Old Solo Stuff:

I spent a couple years at the start of college spending Sunday afternoons at my parents' apartment in Hampstead recording a bunch of songs that I wrote. It was definitely my most prolific time and there are some real gems in here alongside a lot of poorly recorded nonsense (if i could tell them apart, I would be a much better entertainer).

Jay & Erik:

This was the last time we got together to play music. Alas, oh glorious times of yesteryear!

Mad Max Recordings:

Erik and I spent many evenings with ridiculous movies, too much wine and just enough guitars.

Retford's Last Gig:

Thanks Musicborn for hosting us and recording our gigs! This was the last beautiful eruption of a fun-loving trio.

Retford Tea Party:

We only ever managed to get a few songs properly recorded

UGLY:

This was my band for about 5 years. I make no claims as to the quality of the music, but we had an incredible amount of fun and I wish I could do it again.

Also, thanks to the developers of the fancy little mp3 players I use on the site. Go XSPF!
